Welcome to the 2016-17 Spiritual Care Guild!
We are entering our 13th year supporting the Spiritual Care Team of Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, and this past year was a great one! We celebrated with the opening of the Dorothy Leavey Interfaith Center at Children’s Hospital in February. The opening was celebrated by Spiritual leaders from around Los Angeles, as well as many civic dignitaries. The Guild members assisted the Department in a week long open house for the staff at Children’s Hospital, including a night shift event, to introduce the new spiritual space to the community.
The ongoing goal of the Spiritual Care Guild is to provide spiritual care to the patients, families, and staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Today, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles has one of the finest chaplaincy programs in the country, serving as a model for other hospitals. When a child is a patient at Children’s Hospital, challenged by illness, accident or disease, having someone to talk and share feelings with provides hope that helps restore the body and the spirit.
Our chaplains are also on the front line to provide spiritual care to the doctors and nurses that are taking care of the children and families during their time of uncertainty. The chaplains host Tea For the Soul events for any staff that requests this special time. Chaplains have a tea cart they bring to the floor, our Guild provides the home made cookies and teas, and the chaplains give the staff a moment of respite from their duties. This year, our Guild was able to help revamp the tea cart with our Angel logo, and provide Angel coffee cups and napkins as well. This small revamp and special touch has helped the chaplains connect with the staff at Children’s Hospital and promote our Guild and the Interfaith Center.
Our fundraising efforts directly support the chaplaincy team and events that our Guild participates in. Last month we celebrated Rev. Dagmar Grefe, Ph.D. at our benefit themed Oktoberfest! We gathered under the stars at a beautiful home and gave thanks to Rev. Dagmar and all of her hard work and dedication to the Department, her students, and the amazing staff she leads. Keep a look out for our Angels In Action fundraising campaign in January, it will be coupled with the second year of our Angel Cookies delivery program, which was a great success last year. We need to reach 100% member participation for the Angels In Action campaign!
I am looking forward to being the President of the Guild for the second year, to build upon our successes and expand our Guild’s involvement with the Department. I encourage you to come to one of our upcoming events, and bring a friend along to learn more about our guild. Please know that your involvement, and commitment to the Spiritual Care Guild of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles makes a difference to thousands of children, their families and the staff.
